ASHEVILLE, N.C. (September 12, 2018) – On Wednesday night, the UNCA Bulldogs’ men’s soccer team scored in the 83rd minute to draw even with the Appalachian State Mountaineers and ultimately earn a 1-1 tie.
The equalizer came off the foot of Brendan O’Dowd as he drilled a rebound through a host of Mountaineers and past goalkeeper Jake Chasteen. Dante’ Bova and Luize Felipe Dantas assisted for the Bulldogs.
Appalachian State opened the game’s scoring when Camden Holbrook beat UNCA’s Dakotah Bainter just three minutes into the contest.
UNCA’s attack included steady pressure from freshman Izaiah Vignali, the A.C. Reynolds graduate who was named the Gatorade North Carolina Boys Soccer Player of the Year this past June.
On hand for the game, and filling in the stands on the Bulldogs’ side were evacuees fleeing in advance of Hurricane Florence. They were provided with free admission to the contest.
The Bulldogs are now 1-5-1 after the tie, while the Sun Belt’s Appalachian State is 4-1-1. UNCA’s next contest is on the road against Davidson (2-3) on Sunday, September 16.
