Harrisonburg, VA – The Colgate Raiders traveled to James Madison in the second round of the NCAA FCS tournament on Saturday. There they beat the host Dukes, 44-38, to advance to the FCS quarterfinals.
The key to the Raiders (9-4) success was their ability to run the ball. Quarterback Jake Melville ran for 166 yards and two touchdowns. He also passed for a pair of strikes through the air. One yard ahead of him was 5’9″ tailback James Holland, who had 167 yards and also ran for two touchdowns. Offensively the Dukes received a solid effort from quarterback Bryan Schor. Schor continued to protect the ball, as he has done since replacing starter Vad Lee in game 8, and was an efficient 13-18 for 141 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions.
The Dukes fell behind early, 17-0, and were hampered by two fumbles on special teams, one on a kickoff and a second on a punt return. Both were non-contact miscues while attempting to field the kick. They battled back to tie the game at 38-38 in the fourth quarter before ultimately falling.
Included above is the press conference after the game with JMU head coach Everett Withers. I was able to get a question in at roughly the six-minute mark about the offense they faced. Withers did a great job fielding questions right on the heels of a tough loss. – TF
