San Diego, CA – Navy defeated San Diego State, 17-16, in the 14th annual Poinsettia Bowl on Tuesday. An estimated 33,000 fans crowded into San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium to see the Mids capture the victory on a 24-yard Austin Grebe field goal with just 1:27 left on the game clock.

Navy’s junior quarterback Keenan Reynolds was held largely in check, gaining only 35 yards on 19 carries. Obscured by the low yardage were two critical rushing touchdowns, a one-yarder in the first quarter and a six-yard score in the third. Those two scores and Grebe’s field goal accounted for all of Navy’s points.

Senior linebacker Jordan Drake helped Navy (8-5) make the 17 points stand by ringing up 13 total tackles to lead all defenders. Despite Drake’s efforts, San Diego State’s standout running back Donne Pumphry rushed for 141 yards and a score in a losing effort for the Aztecs (7-6).

The Poinsettia Bowl got it start in 1952 as a military game and was staged for four years before the modern era of the game began in 2005 with a 51-30 Navy win over Colorado State. TCU leads all college teams with three Poinsettia Bowl victories.
