Coppin State (1-3) posted a much-needed win on Wednesday by topping Navy (3-2), 10-8, in Annapolis. Coppin went 1-53 last year to tie the all-time NCAA record for losses in a single season.  The Mids bounced back with a win on Friday night over Air Force (0-5), 3-1, at the Freedom Classic in Kinston, NC. They are scheduled to play the Falcons three more times this weekend.

Senior righty Ben Nelson (2-0) stood out in Friday’s victory, striking out eight without issuing a walk in his nine innings of work.

With a light snow falling at times, the Penn Quakers (1-0) men’s lacrosse team downed Duke (2-3), 14-9, at Franklin Field in Philadelphia on Friday. Duke entered the game ranked #14 in the country. Senior attackman Tim Schwalje had three goals and four assists for Penn, while fellow attackman, sophomore Isaac Bock, added four goals.

The Penn website has an excellent description of defenseman Anthony Santomo’s fourth quarter goal that staked the Quakers to an 11-9 lead after Duke drew within one.

“The stage was set for a fantastic finish, but Penn had other ideas. Instead, another senior captain,Anthony Santomo, sent the Penn bench into bananas mode when he grabbed a loose ball in the defensive end, raced to the other end and finished the Quakers’ first long-pole goal of the season with 8:46 left.”
