Navy baseball and lacrosse both opened their 2013 seasons over the past two weeks, and both with auspicious results.
On Saturday, the baseball squad traveled to Norfolk State where they took two of three from the host Spartans (1-2). Navy (2-1) ace Ben Nelson was on the hill for the Mids and delivered with six strikeouts and just one earned run in the 4-3 game one win. Fellow senior, reliever Joel Rhinehart, notched his first save of the season in the contest.
The Mids dropped the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, 7-6, before clinching the series win with a 13-1 victory on Sunday. Rightfielder Brandon Beans went 4-6 with two RBIs in the finale.
Navy’s home opener is tomorrow against Coppin State (0-3) in Annapolis at 2 PM. The Golden Eagles began their season on the road against Arizona (3-0), the defending national champions.
On Friday night, the Navy men’s lacrosse team ran its record to 2-0 with an 11-7 home victory over Detroit Mercy (0-2). Tucker Hall led the way with three goals for the Mids.
Navy’s season began a week earlier with a 20-7 win over VMI (2-0) in Annapolis.
